RESILIENT LITTLE THREADS
Pulses that pump through my body, haze that clouds my eyes. Throughout my life, my hands have always carried a pen, as a medium to help me accept the circumstances that I cannot change.
Years of learning life drawing and rendering would soon turn into distorted visions of dispersed line art that would help me through having chronic anemia; the muscle pain I endure, fatigue, rapid pulses, and light headedness.
I painted interpretations of the visions I see when I close my eyes, often referred as closed-eye hallucinations. These visions are more heightened when oxygen through the blood is low. Closing my eyes is a coping method for anxiety, and sensory sensitivities associated with chronic anemia.
Biological in nature, my work has been tied to my personal experience using light deprived optical visions, which help me tune into the physical pulses of my body. I create abstract first perspective visions to express an internal battle of the emotional being tied to the physical self.
Resilient Little Threads focuses on mixed media ink painting and drawing on paper using repetitive additive and subtractive techniques, as well as early experiments with scanography. I use layers of transparent washes and opaque sporadic line drawing to create a simulation of my experience. Taking a damp cloth, I wipe away heavy ink blots to mimic the spots in optic memory, the surrounding area becomes a visual echo of what was once there.
